Makhdum quotes from Abu Bakr’s (Allah have mercy on them) book Kibrit al Ahmar,

“and among the folk, the sharia is like a ship, the tariqa like the sea, and the haqiqa like a pearl; so whoever desires the pearl must board the ship, and embark on the sea, and only then will he arrive at the pearl. Whoever leaves this sequence, will not reach the pearl. So the first obligation on the seeker is the sharia, by which is intended what Allah and His messenger have commanded.

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen Chishti quotes from Shaikh Suhrawardi’s (Allah have mercy on them) Awarif regarding inner conversation,

“excess inner conversation hardens the heart just as excess speech does, for it is like speech without a tongue…

A seeker must take account of his inward self, just as he does for his outward self. For inner speech, and remembering past affairs, which he saw or heard, is akin to speaking with another person inside himself.

So he should bind his inward self with awareness of the divine gaze and watch over it (muraqabah wa ri’aya), just as he binds his outward self with acts of obedience and various forms of invocation.”

In addition to the above mentioned dua ask Allah for all the blessings mentioned and promised for His slaves during this month as mentioned in Quran or Hadith (sayings of our beloved Prophet, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Tell Allah that I do not deserve them but I am in extreme need of them. Please, bestow them on me by Your kind Grace and infinite Mercy.

Once my father Cdr Shaukat Kamal (Allah have mercy on him) and I were in the presence of Shaikh Mansur Ali Khan (Allah protect & preserve him) in Jeddah when the commencement of Ramadan was announced. On hearing the news Shaikh raised his hands for dua. He made a lengthy dua asking Allah for facilitation of all the good deeds in accordance to Sunna & their acceptance, avoidance of all that is sinful and useless and being blessed with all mercy and merits of this month as mentioned in Quran & Hadith.

May Allah facilitate it for us with afiyet. Ameen.

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) said,

‘Whenever a person goes to the mosque, wether it be for salah or otherwise, and he makes an intention for voluntary i’tikaf (seclusion), he will receive its reward as long as he remains in the mosque. ‘

Makhdum Zayn Uddin Al Malabari quotes from Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy on them),

Non-religious sciences may be blameworthy, praiseworthy or neutral. As for those which are praiseworthy, they are the sciences connected with the wellbeing of humanity in this life, such as medicine and mathematics.

…..medicine, since it is necessary for the preservation of bodily health

And do not be surprised by our statement that medicine and mathematics are communal obligations,…….because if these trades were to disappear, human society would be exposed to destruction.

…….As the One who created the disease also created the cure, and guided humanity to the use of the latter, and prepared the causes for its benefit, it is not permissible for humans to allow themselves to be destroyed by self-neglect.

The States of the Heart

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen Malabari al Chishti (Allah have mercy on him) said in regards to fard al ayn (absolute essentials) issues of Islam,

‘The states of the heart, one should know the praiseworthy qualities which one must adopt, and the blameworthy qualities which one must avoid.

As for the praiseworthy traits, they include reliance on Allah, sincerity for Him, praise and thankfulness for His blessings, repentance from one’s sins, fear, hope, abstinence, love, patience, pleasure with His decree, and the remembrance of death.

As for the blameworthy traits, they include greed for food and drink, and a dislike of hunger (given its many benefits such as the purity and softness of the heart, humiliation of the lower self, breaking lusts, and the departure of excessive sleep which prevents worship), eagerness for speech regarding what does not benefit one (the tongue has many faults, the most severe of which are backbiting, lying, and excessive joking and praise), anger, envy, stinginess, love of rank, love of the world, arrogance, pride, and showing off.’

Hafiz Abu Qasim ibn Asakir (Allah have mercy on him) said,

“Know brother, may Allah grant us and you His pleasure and make us among those who fear and revere Him as is His due, that the flesh of the scholars is poisoned, and that the practice of Allah of rending the veil of the one who harms them is well-known, and that one who lets loose his tongue in reviling them is afflicted before his death by the death of his heart.”

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect and preserve him) said,

‘Allah opens ‘Uloom for the teacher upon the eagerness and zeal of the student. Just like a baby cries and milk draws forth from the chest of the mother.

Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (Allah have mercy upon him) once stated to his students, “Whatever you have achieved is through me, but if you did not have the burning desire in your souls I would not have had such inspirations and stimulus as well.’
