Advice to scholars

Sayyidi wa sanadi Shaikh Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him). mentioned that scholars should have complete independence from people, especially the wealth of people.

However, this independence (Ghina) should not be from Allah Ta’ala; rather even after Allah Ta’ala gives sufficient wealth we should still show our neediness to Him.

Thereafter Shaikh quoted the following Hadith:

The Prophet () said, “While Prophet Ayyub (peace be upon him) was taking a bath, naked, a large number of gold locusts fell on him. He tried to collect them in a piece of cloth, when he heard his Lord (Allah) calling him: ‘O Ayyub ! Have I not sufficed you to care for what you see (the worldly possessions)?’ Ayyub said: ‘Indeed by Your Power, but I can never do away with Your Blessings.”‘

Primary concern: self improvement

Sayyidi wa sanadi Shaikh Mufti Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him) related that a scholar of the past said:

‘إذا أحدث الله لك علما فأحدث له عبادة، لا يكن همك أن تحدث به الناس

If Allah gives you a new type of knowledge then do the new kind of worship (i.e. Shukr/being thankful). And it should not be your concern that I will narrate this to people.’

That is, your primary concern should be to act upon the new knowledge.

Giving advice

A seeker presented a letter to sayyidi wa sanadi Shaikh Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) in which he sought advice regarding some worldly matter.

Shaikh excused himself, saying Hakim al Umma Thanwi (Allah have mercy on him) would excuse himself from offering advice related to worldly matters. He would say that you can ask me whether something is permissible or impermissible in Shariah, but don’t ask me whether I should do this or that.

Shaikh related that once someone asked him for advice and, with many related details and conditions. Advice was given to him. This individual later went around telling people that I am doing this with Shaikh’s orders, to the extent that he said the same to Shaikh himself, i.e. I did this with your explicit command.

Soon after, Shaikh clarified to this seeker (who presented the letter), probably to allay his fear that his Shaykh is displeased with him, that this reply does not mean that I am angry with you, rather advice regarding these matters requires detailed knowledge about the matter, the individual’s temperament, preferences, etc, so I’m not in a position to give correct advice.

Khalwa ma’Allah

A senior seeker presented his Islahi letter to sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him).

Shaikh asked him regarding his activities. He replied that he manages two Madrasas, teaches three advanced books, writes Fatwa, and is also the Imam and Khateeb of the biggest Masjid of his country.

Shaikh commented that this is a lot of responsibilities and all are Deen. Even with this busy daily schedule, some time (whatever easily possible) should be taken out for seclusion (Khalwat ma’ Allah). (That is being alone with Allah.)

Purpose of Sharia, tariqat & haqiqa

Shaikh Saad ud Deen Khairabadi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

My dear, do you know what is the purpose of Islamic rulings (Sharia), Spiritual path (tariqat) and Divine reality (haqiqa)?

(Listen) The purpose of them is that an individual becomes truthful in speech, morally upright, relatively harmless, wise, good mannered and a gnostic (arif).

Intention

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen (Allah have mercy on him) reported that one of the pious predecessors (salaf) said,

“I am ashamed that any action I do be without an intention, even my eating, drinking, sleeping and using the toilet. ”

……….

It is related that one of the righteous was seen in a dream after his death.

The dreamer asked him “what has Allah done with you?”

“He has forgiven me and has raised my rank.”

“By means of what?”

He replied “Here we are dealt with by generosity (jud) not by bowing (ruku’) and prostrating(sujud) (in worship), and are given on the basis of intention (niya), not by our acts of service (khidma), and are forgiven through Divine Grace (fadl), not by our deeds (fi’l).”

Advice for electoral candidate

A graduate of Darul Uloom Karachi who is a candidate for the upcoming elections visited Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve and protect him) and requested for dua and advice.

Sayyidiwa sanadi made dua for his success and said,

‘Turn to Allah in all matters. Make acquisition of His pleasure your primary goal.

These days a prevalent problem is seeking the pleasure of the public (ardhaal khalq). (That is, seeking public approval by doing things contrary to Sharia). Avoid this totally. ‘

Remembrance

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen Chishti (Allah have mercy on him) said,

One of the disciples of Abu Uthman al-Maghribi (Allah have mercy on him) complained to him

“My tongue often flows with invocation and recitation but my heart remains heedless.”

The shaykh replied,

“Give thanks to Allah for He has put one of your body parts to use in goodness, accustoming it to invocation, rather than evil or useless speech.”

Being practical and wise

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen Chishti (Allah have mercy on him) said,

The likeness of one who turns away from practical knowledge and busies himself with disputation and rare branches of knowledge is like a sick man with a myriad of illnesses, at the point of death, who finds an intelligent physican; but rather than asking him about the cure for his illness he questions him about the properties of drugs and remedies, and the rare points of medicine.

Muslim unity

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him) instructed,

‘We should love all Muslims and be compassionate to them.

Unfortunately, we have groupings, we are not willing to sit with one another.  We have the attitude ‘whatever I do is correct’.

Regard the work carried out by others as your own work.

Thank Allah that He gave Tawfiq to someone to do the work.

In this country, do not delve into he is a Salafi/Wahhabi or a non-Salafi. We have differences. However what unites us is much more than the differences. All Muslims are brothers. Regard each other as your brothers.  We should focus on the principles of Deen which are agreed upon. Through unity, we can bring about a revolution. If a Salafi brings a person closer to Islam, appreciate and value it and I say the same to them.’

Inner speech

Makhdum Zayn ud Deen Chishti quotes from Shaikh Suhrawardi’s (Allah have mercy on them) Awarif regarding inner conversation,

“excess inner conversation hardens the heart just as excess speech does, for it is like speech without a tongue…

A seeker must take account of his inward self, just as he does for his outward self. For inner speech, and remembering past affairs, which he saw or heard, is akin to speaking with another person inside himself.

So he should bind his inward self with awareness of the divine gaze and watch over it (muraqabah wa ri’aya), just as he binds his outward self with acts of obedience and various forms of invocation.”

Ramadan Prep

In addition to the above mentioned dua ask Allah for all the blessings mentioned and promised for His slaves during this month as mentioned in Quran or Hadith (sayings of our beloved Prophet, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Tell Allah that I do not deserve them but I am in extreme need of them. Please, bestow them on me by Your kind Grace and infinite Mercy.

Once my father Cdr Shaukat Kamal (Allah have mercy on him) and I were in the presence of Shaikh Mansur Ali Khan (Allah protect & preserve him) in Jeddah when the commencement of Ramadan was announced. On hearing the news Shaikh raised his hands for dua. He made a lengthy dua asking Allah for facilitation of all the good deeds in accordance to Sunna & their acceptance, avoidance of all that is sinful and useless and being blessed with all mercy and merits of this month as mentioned in Quran & Hadith.

May Allah facilitate it for us with afiyet. Ameen.
