Real Message of Seerah

Sayyid wa sanadi Mawlana Mohammad Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him) wrote:

“What really is important with regard to the Holy Prophet, (Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) is,

first to follow his teachings,

and second to make his pious Seerah available to every Muslim,

to preserve it in the hearts of the Muslims from the very childhood,

to educate the family members to run their lives according to it and

to hold it as the most glorious example of the human conduct the universe has ever witnessed.

To do all this with utmost love and reverence, not manifested by some formal activities only, but also through actual behavior of following the Sunnah.

This cannot be done by merely holding processions and illuminating the walls.

This requires constant and consistent efforts and a meaningful program of education and training.”

Acquiring true religiosity

Hakim al-Umma Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him) said:

“It is from suhba (pious companionship) that deen (religion) is acquired.

I swear to it that deen can not be obtained from books!

Formal religious knowledge may be achieved via reading, but true religiosity can never be obtained without serving eagerly at the footsteps of a master.

The Prophetic advice

إذا قمت في صلواتك فصل صلاة مودع

 ولا تتكلم بكلام تعتذر منه

واجمع الإياس مما في أيدي الناس

An individual approached Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) and requested for some concise advice.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

At the time of offering salat, pray as if this is your last prayer.

And

Do not speak anything for which you will have to apologize later.

And

Do not have any desire for what other people possess.

Red Flags

dating-red-flags

We live in peculiar times. Moral degradation, deception and selfishness are rampant. None of the facets of human life are spared. Neither the religion of Islam nor its sublime application in form of Tasawwuf are an exception.

For Tasawwuf in very few cases this is in active form (i.e active deception and fraud), sometimes it is due to ignorance and most of the time it is because of a delusional state resulting from lay public admiration and following.

Hence it is essential to be on high alert when approaching Tasawwuf and spiritual masters. A minor lapse can end up in a major disaster, especially in here-after.

No silsilaof Tasawwuf is spared. For this reason relying only on a ijazah certification is grossly inappropriate.  A thorough evaluation is recommended before committing to a Shaykh.

Senior Shuyukh continue to evaluate their khulafa on a regular basis and revoke the permission ( ijaza) granted to them if necessary.  Any suspicious activity by any of the khulafa needs to be reported to his Shaykh.

For a seeker following are some of the points that should raise red flags and alert him/her to be more cautious in this context. They are from the teachings of Hakim al-Umma Shaykh Ashraf ‘Ali Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him).

1. The preaching and propagation are for a specific Shaykh and Tariqa. All others Islamic groups and activities are looked down upon.

2. There are boastful claims (kashaf o karamat, dreams) and self-eulogies by the Shaykh himself or those close to him.

3. The rituals and customs are given preference over Sunna and piety in everyday life. The hierarchy of fiqh is ignored.  The reward-able (mustaheb) actions are done as though they are essential (wajib).

4. There is micromanagement of murid‘s affair. That is, vital financial, social interaction and marital issue decisions are made by Shaykh.

5. There are financial schemes for donations or investments by Shaykh or his representatives.

6. The tariqa teachings are imposed on the seeker to the extent beyond their current yearning and capabilities. The instructions given to and restrictions set are unrealistic for their current spiritual state.

7. The inappropriate actions of senior or close murids are ignored.

8. People are actively recruited by senior and close murids to make baiyah without having a clear understanding of the commitment.

9. All those who approach for baiyah are accepted immediately.

10. None or limited individualized guidance and follow up is possible from the Shaykh.

11. The established text and teachings of the previous spiritual masters of the tariqa are ignored. In our case they are the books & teachings of Hakim al-Umma in particular.

12. Emphasis is on a physical structure of khanqah or zawiya than on the spiritual tarbiyat.

13. Specific type or color headgear and particular style of attire becomes the hallmark of the silsila.

14. The majority of the followers are lay people and their spiritual condition has not changed in spite of being with the silsila for considerable amount of time.

15. The non-scholar sufi masters do not refer fiqhi questions to the scholars.  Moreover they actively create mistrust of scholars in general.

16. The issues discussed in spiritual talks are beyond the comprehension and practical benefit of an ordinary seeker.

17. All genuine criticism is taken negatively. The reply is reflective of poor adab and blameworthy morals. It does not lead to introspection and improvement.

Etcetra.

In summary, it is essential to be very careful before committing our most precious thing: faith (eman). A thorough investigation is essential.

And remember it is never to late to do so.

May Allah save us all. Amin!

Alchemy

ismezat

Arif-billah Shaykh Dr. Abdul Hayy Arifi (Allah have mercy on him) said;

‘For two minutes talk to Allah any time during the day telling Him,
“O Allah! I am inept, weak, unworthy, and unable to do any thing significant. Please, do have Your special benevolence for me.”
Say this all.

 Can’t you even do this?
You certainly have the power to articulate this.

(And if you do so,) Then you will see how your (spiritual) condition changes (for the better).
This is an alchemy prescription by our Shaykh Hakim al-Umma (Allah have mercy on him).’

Seeker’s affliction

narcissim

Sidi Ahmad Zarruq al-Barnusi al-Fasi (Allah have mercy on him) [1442 – 1493 CE] said,

I have also seen that the seekers of this age are afflicted with five things:

1.The preference of ignorance over knowledge

2. Being deluded by every spiritual impostor

3. The inability to prioritize important matters

4. Using the spiritual path as a means to inflate the selfish soul

5. Attempting to expedite a spiritual opening without fulfilling its prerequisite conditions.

This has resulted in five other afflictions:

1. Preferring innovations as opposed to the tried and true prophetic practice (Sunna)

2. Following the people of claims and conceit as opposed to the truth

3. Acting on capricious desires in all of their affairs, even the most celestial

4. Preferring fantasies to realities

5. The manifestation of claims without sincerity.

Allah’s love

allahisakbar3

Sayyidi wa sanadiShaykh Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him) said,

‘The people living in the vicinity of the House of Allah (Ka’ba) have a greater responsibility of following the Shariah commandments. To do so they must develop a strong relationship with Allah.

As per the teachings of my Shaykh Hadrat ‘Arifi (Allah have mercy on him) following three things are helpful in developing this relationship and love of Allah,

1. Recitation of the Sunna prayers (azkar) for the different occasions in once daily life.

2. Making supplications for each and everything.

3. Being abunbdantly thankful of all the blessings Allah has bestowed on us.’

The daily wird & Sunna!

tasbih1232

Stepping out of Masjid al-Haram, Makkah sayyidi wa sanadi  Shaykh Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him) replied to an individual’s question regarding the daily wird,

‘Keep the amount of the daily wird at the level which you can complete easily.  However, if on some day you have extra time and desire then go ahead and do more. ‘

He further instructed,

‘Read the book ‘Uswa e Rasool e Akram’ conscientiously and check which Sunna actions you are missing and then include them in your life.’

Speech of heart.

fgf90_large

It is an established principle that when the tongue is busy talking the heart is quietly listening to it. Whereas, when the tongue is silent the heart starts to talk.

Therefore, hold your tongue so that the heart does not listen to its useless speech. Instead make it the organ of remembrance (of Allah). Hence, your heart will become accustomed to this remembrance. (And eventually start to speak this itself).

And tawfiq is from Allah!

Teachings of Awliya

sunnahwayofSUFII

Grand Mufti of Pakistan, Mufti Mohammad Shafii’, senior khalifa of Hakeem al-Umma (Allah have mercy on them) writes:

“The narratives regarding the senior Awliya Allah fall under three categories;

  1. Those regarding their kashaf & karamat (unveiling and miracles)
  2. Those related to their higher levels of ibadah (worship) and piety.
  3. Finally, their advice and instruction for improvement to general Muslims.

From all these it is this third thing that the general Muslims have to read and learn with utmost emphasis. This is because it is essence of the teachings of Awliya. It is the most effective medicine for betterment of Muslims.”

Preface, Nuzhatul Basateen (Translation of Imam Yafai’i ra’s Rawdh ur Reyaheen+) page 6. Hakim al-Umma Mawlana Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him) supervised the translation of this book and recommended its reading for salikeen to develop and increase the love of Allah.

It is published by HM Saeed Co., Karachi, Pakistan. It is freely available at major Islamic bookstores.

Change for better!

Advicing a couple going through a tough marital conflict sayyidi wa sanadi

Mawlana Mohammmad Taqi Usmani (may Allah preserve him) said,

“You both need to change for better.

Do not be discouraged by past experiences.

Consider that you are starting a new life together again from scratch.

Pay close attention to each other’s rights and your own obligations.

Keep the envoirnment at home relaxed,  pleasant and lively.

Allocate some special quality time daily for each other.”

Companionship to be avoided

furnace

Shaykh-e-kamil Arifbillah Dr. Abdul Hayy Arifi (Allah have mercy on him) said;

“The companionships (suhba) that do not make one remember Allah or His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), reflect on one’s own debilitated condition and perceive one’s filthy inner-self and lead to increased involvement in dispensable (ghair-maqsood) and increasing desire of fame (hubb e jah) are to be shunned.

Otherwise, tell me what will be the advantage of such supercilious suhba?

A companionship is only useful if it has the property of changing our life for better. It cures our spiritual aliments and makes evident to us our moral deficiencies and spiritual shallowness. “

Results of involvement in useless activities

time21

Shaykh Mawlana Karamat Ali Jaunpuri (Allah have mercy on him) said,

This lowly speaker has experienced it well that when an individual is engrossed in useless activities his/her previous piety wanes away. Therefore, one should repent immediately if he/she becomes involved in anything useless and not return to that activity again.

Precious advice

tresure

Shaykh Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi (Allah have mercy on him) said the following addressing the students of Medina (al-munawwarah) University,

‘A scholar should be more pious and congnizant (of Allah).

Being excessively involved in contraversial issues makes one negligent of his/her own personal improvement.

Focus more on practice of issues that are  held unanimous. For example, khushu in salah. Do not be involved in peripheral minor issues.

You are aware of the scholarly acheivements of Imam Ahmad and Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah (Allah have mercy on them). However, you are not aware of their high moral character, humility, fear of Allah and being busy in night crying.

It was the practice of Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah (Allah have mercy on him) that whenever, he faced a difficulty he would go to an isolated mosque, cry and make the following supplication repeatedly,

Ya mu’alim al Ibrahim ‘alimni, ya mufham al Suleman fahimni

The greed and desire of the worldly has made the scholars worthless.

Be an example for others.’

Advice to reader of Sufi works!

old-book-shelf

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mawlana Mohammad Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him and allow us to benefit from him a lot. Ameen!) gives the following invaluable advice to those interested in classic Sufi works:

“A point never to be forgotten when reading the books of venerable Sufi masters is that the things to acquire from them are;

– the special relationship with Allah (ta’aluq ma’Allah),

– remembrance and contemplation of hereafter,

– turning to Allah with humility (inabat),

– recognizing the plots & deceptions of nafs and methods to prevent them,

– methods of cleansing the heart and

– love of Allah and His messenger صلی اللہ علیہ و الہ وسلم.

As far as the fiqh (Shariah juristic rulings) and kalam (science of logic and art of reasoning) issues, historic events and narrations (rewayat) are concerned these are neither their (i.e. Sufi masters) field of specialization nor one can rely on them solely in these matters.
