The Shaykh:Tawheed e matlub

Shaykh Buzaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote,

“When a seeker takes a perfect Shaykh, it is proper manner (adab) not to turn to any other Shaykh, no matter who he may be. If he does turn to someone else then he will never benefit, nor will he ever gain anything even if he takes on a thousand perfected Shaykh, due to his lack of sincerity and trueness.”

The adab of the true seeker, page 64

This is the reason why Ashrafiya stresses so much on being 100% sure before you commit and make baya’.

This is not to be taken lightly.

Before you commit,

Do research.

Visit many Shuykuh.

Communicate with them both in public and private.

Make lot of supplication.

Consult the spiritually mature and more knowledgeable.

Make istikhara.

Then only commit.

Sheikh-Mureed Relationship: Practicality

Tasawwuf: Akabir vs us!

Sayyidi wa sanadi Hadhrat Mawlana Mohammad Taqi Usmani (may Allah preserve him) said,

I t remains unclear what innovations, absurdities and presumptions people have put into the understanding and practice of Tasawwuf. The reality is that going to a friend of Allah (Ahlullah/Shaykh) is to get one’s heart, ego and internal morals rectified.

From Hadhrat (Mawlana Qasim) Nanotwi رحمه الله تعالى till Hadhrat (Mawlana Husain Ahmed) Madni رحمه الله تعالى and Hadhrat (Shabbir Ahmed) Usmani رحمه الله تعالى there was not a single individual (from amongst the scholars of Deoband) who after graduation did not approach a Shaykh (Ahlullah) for his moral reformation (islah).

In our atmosphere these things have become strange. Nowadays if anyone is practicing this (the akabirs’ way), he is said to have become a sufi (in some degrading sense).  The result of this lack of self-reformation (islah) is that the hearts are completely filled with love of worldly/materialistic (dunya) issues, especially love for fame (hubb e jah) and love for wealth (hubb e maal). This is reason that the preacher’s (da’ee) call is ineffective.

In conclusion, a very big reason for the failure of all our struggles and efforts is the abandoning of this concern (fikr) of self-reformation (islah).

Adherence to the Sunnah and the Mashayikh Chisht

Some people brand the chishtiyya as being ahl-e-bid`ah (innovators in deen). In relation to this Hakimul-Ummah, Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahimahullah) comments:

“The reality of the matter is that the chistiyya have been very staunch adherents to the blessed sunnah. One of the incidents which demonstrates this fact is the incident of Hazrat Kabirul-Auliya Jalalud-Deen Panipati (rahimahullah). When Hazrat Jalalud-Deen became sick, he was bed-ridden and even sitting up was extremely difficult for him.

In this state, when his medicine was brought for him to take, he sat straight up (in spite of the hardship) and told his khadims to bring him down to the ground from the bed. The khuddam had no choice but to fulfil the Shaikh’s orders and they laid him down to the floor. Sitting on the floor, he took his medicine and then remarked: “As far as my knowledge is concerned, it is not established from the sunnah that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) partook of any food, or medicine, on a bed.”

SubhanAllah, in spite of the fact, that this is permissible (for a sick and excused person) he still underwent extreme difficulty in order to fulfil the sunnah, and even abstain from doing such an act which has the possibility of not being a sunnah.

Can such personalities (who abstain from even the possibility of opposing the sunnah) be branded as innovators in deen? Unfortunately, the reality of the matter nowadays is that it has become the habit of people, that anyone who is not in accordance to “our” specific style and methodology, then he must be a bid`ati… This is absolutely wrong.”

Gift of love

Arif billah Hadhrat Dr Abdul Hayy Arifi (may Allah have mercy on him) instructed the seekers to supplicate the following after each salah,

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّيْ عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

(Allahumma a’inni ‘ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ‘ibadatika)

O Allah! Assist me in remembering You, in thanking You, and in worshipping You in the best of manners.

This is gift of love. Presented by the Allah’s beloved to one on his blessed Companions.

One day he (Prophet Muhammad [Allah bless him and grant him peace]) took Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and said, “O Mu’adh, by Allah (exalted is He) I love you, and I advise you, O Mu’adh, never forget to recite, after every prayer (the above).”

Repugnance from sins!

A day before his death in the blessed Medinah, Arif billah Hadhrat Dr. Hafeezullah (may Allah have mercy on him) instructed his son,

“An individual’s aversion for sin should be similar to his innate repugnance to filth.”
